ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROPOSALS/AWARDS: STUDENTS OF THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE STUDIO PROPOSE DESIGN SOLUTIONS ALONG THE AREA OF AGIOU ANTONIOU IN KATO PAPHOS

On Friday, June 3rd 2016 students of the Landscape Architecture Studio, School of Architecture, Land and Environmental Sciences of Neapolis University in Cyprus presented their design proposals along the area of Agiou Antoniou  at the building of Palia Elektriki. The aim of the design proposals was to enhance the urban open space of Kato Paphos for both residents and tourists under  the guidance of Dr. Julia Georgi, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture, Land and Environmental Sciences.

The project was an initiative of the invitation of the Committee UPGRADE THE AREA ALONG AGIOU ANTONIOU represented by the Architect Mr. Costas Sophocleous for a joint action with the University of Neapolis.

So, a group of third year  students of Landscape Architecture Studio undertook the project of the  implementation of master plan and design proposals along specific areas of Agiou Antoniou street. The study area includes a number of important focal points that may form the main urban core of Kato Paphos and enhance the image of the center city.

Such a central urban core can be a driving force for the smart and sustainable development of modern Paphos . The Mayor of Paphos Mr. Phaidon Phaidonos greeted the event and recognized the importance of integrated design/planning interventions in urban areas and the contribution of the University of Neapolis, School of Architecture, Land and Environmental Sciences in upgrading of Paphos and implementing an integrated urban intervention that meets the needs of the local community and the tourist industry in the best way. Greetings from the University of Neapolis was addressed by the Vice Rector of Neapolis University Professor Diomedes Markoulis, who welcomed the outcome of this cooperation stressing the important role of the Department of Landscape Architecture in resolving issues of urban outdoor Paphos area.

Next, students presented their design  proposals  in the presence of the President of the University of Neapolis Mr. Michael Leptos, the Vice Rector of the University of Neapolis Professor Diomedes Markoulis, the Dean of the School of Economics of Neapolis University Professor Spyros Vliamos, the Head of the Department of Law Professor Constantinos Athanasopoulos, the Board Member of PAPHOS 17 Mr. Simos Tselepos, a number of professionals, locals  and students’ parents.

The design proposals were evaluated by a 5-member committee consisted of: Costas Sophocleous, Architect, Christos Konstantinidis, Architect, Technical Services of the Municipality of Paphos Charalambos Karolidis, Engineer of Paphos Municipality, Chrisafenia Theodoulos, Architect, Nearchos Theodoulos, Architect. The design awards were given to the following groups:

First Prize (€ 500):

· Petros Kaloterakis and Andreas Savvas (Church of Theoskepasti)

· Maria Molotova (Church of Agiou Antoniou)

Second Prize (€ 200):

· Paul Rados, Giannis Soldatos, Angelos Spanos, Christophoros Spyrakos (Park of Agia Napa)

· Pieris Ioannou and Costas Oiconomou (Park of Ayia Napa)

C. Award (100 €):

· Maria Gerogiannaki, Lazaros Efthymiades and Konstantinos Perivolaris (Street of Agiou Antoniou)

The first prize was awarded by the Municipal Director Mr. Nicos Simillides and the Vice Rector of the University of Neapolis Professor Diomedes Markouli, the Second Prize by the member of the Board of Paphos 2017, Mr. Simos Tselepos and Mr. Costas Sophocleous representative COMMITTEE UPDATE tHE ROAD St. Anthony and the Third Prize of the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration, Professor Spyros Vliamos Neapolis University.

The prizes were sponsored by the Municipality of Paphos , Mr. Costas Sophocleous, Architect, Mr. Philippos Genethliou (Flairs Club) and Mr. Kostas Azinas (Robin Hood Club) and the reception area of the building of the Palia Elektriki was donated for the event by the Municipality of Paphos .
