Scholarships awarded by the Republic of Cyprus to Syrian refugees for postgraduate studies at Cypriot Universities for the academic year 2016/17.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, announces a number of scholarships awarded to Syrian refugees, temporary residing in Lebanon and Jordan, regarding postgraduate studies in selected English-speaking programs offered by the University of Cyprus and the University of Nicosia and Neapolis University Pafos  for the academic year 2016/17.

Applicants must be of Syrian nationality and reside in Jordan or Lebanon.

Holders of previously attained post-graduate Degrees are not eligible for the Scholarship.

The duration of the awarded scholarships will be consistent with the minimum duration required for the completion of the graduate studies as declared by the regulations of the above stated academic institutions. The scholarship will be renewed each semester provided that satisfying academic progress has been ensured by the scholar each semester (average Grade Point Average of 70/100).

If the academic performance of the scholar does not satisfy the above mentioned scholarship renewal conditions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University, by joint decision may, at their discretion, proceed with a reduction, suspension, interruption or termination of the scholarship. The final decision will be implemented by the University.

The scholarship may be terminated at any given moment, by joint decision by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University, if the scholar withdraws from the University.

Information regarding the scholarship and the academic requirements 

  • Candidates can be informed about the graduate programs offered by each University for the academic year 2016/17 (see Annex) and proceed with their application through the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, University of Cyprus, the University of Nicosia  and Neapolis University
  • Applications for the University of Cyprus are submitted by Friday, 19 August 2016, 00 noon,  as follows:
  • MBA program: the applications are submitted electronically using the online application system of the University http://applications.ucy.ac.cy/postgraduate_appl
  • “Business Economics program (TIME MBE)”, “Economic Analysis”, “English Literature and Comparative Studies”, “Theoretical and Applied Linguistics”, and “Field Archaeology on Land and Under the Sea”: applicants are required to submit a paper application form http://www.ucy.ac.cy/graduateschool/en/admissions/applications-forms. The completed and signed application form accompanied with all the required documents must be submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cyprus in a PDF format at [email protected]
  • Αpplications for the University of Nicosia are submitted at https://apply.unic.ac.cy/login.html by Friday, 23 September 2016
  • Applications for Neapolis University Pafos are submitted online at https://www.nup.ac.cy/form/ or alternatively at [email protected] by Friday, 30 September 2016.

Admission requirements

  • A recognised University degree
  • At least two reference letters
  • Good knowledge of the English language.

The following are considered as acceptable certifications for good knowledge of English language:

  1. C.E O-Level with a minimum grade ‘C’.
  2. G.C.S.E with a minimum grade ‘C’.
  3. Certificate of proficiency in English by the University of Cambridge with a minimum grade ‘C’.
  4. L.T.S / I.E.L.T.S with a minimum grade ‘6’
  5. Τ.O.E.F.L. with a minimum grade of ‘550’ (Paper Based) or ‘213’(Computer Based) or ‘92’(Internet Based).
  6. Undergraduate degree, awarded by an English speaking recognized university

The scholarship will cover the full amount of fees applied to the selected program of studies. In addition, the scholarship will include the following:

  1. Monthly allowance of €600 (for room and board expenses).
  2. Airline ticket to and from Cyprus.
  3. Student medical insurance 175 euros per year.
  4. Arrival expenditures: €70.
  5. Departure expenses: €50
  6. Textbook allowance: €200/per semester.
  7. Any incurring University administrative costs.

Services received by the selected scholars

  • Payment of the monthly allowance the first working day of each month.
  • Mandatory student medical insurance (It is noted that the insurance covers only the awarded scholar).
  • Benefits in accordance with the applicable provisions (entry into restaurants and student participation in cultural activities of the University, etc.).
  • Facilitation of the administrative procedure for obtaining a residence permit in Cyprus.
  • Assistance provided to secure housing, preferably among accommodation offered by the University, depending on availability. In the case that accommodation offered by the University is unavailable, assistance is offered for the attainment of private housing. Rent expenses are not covered by the Universities.
  • Administration of the scholar’s files on behalf of the University. It is understood that the final decision as regarding the registration of a student at a University depends on the University itself.
  • Monitoring the performance of the scholar and provision of counseling services by the University.

Upon the arrival of the scholar in Cyprus, medical examination will be undertaken by a government doctor.

Obligations to be carried through by the scholar 

  • Signing of the relevant contract with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Submit to the selected University, according to the above-mentioned submission deadlines, the following documents:
    1. Certificate of Birth.
    2. Certified copies of pre acquired diplomas and University degrees.
    3. Two passport sized photographs.
    4. Short C.V (curriculum vitae) in English.
    5. Copies of Transcripts
    6. High School Leaving Certificate.
    7. Certificates indicating good knowledge of the English language.
    8. Two Recommendation Letters
    9. Copy of passport or Identity Card
    10. A brief statement of personal goals and research interests (up to 2 pages)
    11. Any fees applying to the procedure of obtaining a residence permit/visa.
