Presentation on Byzantine Gardens and the Gardens of Halki at an International Conference in Istanbul

On May 23rd 2016, Dr. Julia Georgi, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Architecture Land  and Environmental Sciences, presented her  paper as the Key note speaker, entitled  “The Garden at Byzantine times: Issues of Restoration” at the International Conference ‘ USULAR PEMKON KONFERANSLARI which was held from the 23rd-25th of May  2016. Dr. Georgis presentation, focused on her research on the historical development of the Byzantine Gardens and the construction of the gardens of Halki.

The International Conference was co-organized by two Universities from Istanbul: the Istanbul Technical University represented by the Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture Prof. Esbah Hayriye and ISIK University represented by Prof. Dr. Adnan Uzun the Chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture.

The presentation of Dr. Georgi’ s work was attended by his excellence the Metropolitan of Bursa (Ecumenical Patriarchate), Bishop Elpidoforos, Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, while greetings were addressed  by the Dean of the School of Landscape Architecture of ISIK University Professor Abdullah, who expressed a special greeting to Bishop Elpidoforos.

Next, Dr. Julia Georgi visited the gardens of Halki, where she was offered a tour by his excellence Bishop Elpidoforos. The study was carried out by Neapolis University in Cyprus and represented by Dr. Julia Georgi as leader of the design team. The study of the gardens of Halki was  presented to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in September 2014 during a special ceremony attended by the President of Neapolis University, Mr. M. Leptos who received congratulations on the quality of the design work on behalf of Neapolis University. The supervision of the project was conducted by Mr. Nikos Thymakis, Agronomist and member of the design team of Neapolis University.
