The Master’s Programme in Greek Civilization of the School of Law and Social Sciences of Neapolis University of Pafos, in cooperation with the Summer Institute for Ancient Greek Drama & Theatre, organized with great success the third seminar on ancient Greek Drama at Neapolis University. This year’s topic was Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus. The invited speakers were the dramaturge Mr George Mikellis, Dr Diotima Papadi (Assist. Professor of Classics), Dr Klitos Ioannides (Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetics), and, the Director Mr Nikos Siafkalis. The seminars were attended by a great number of Primary and Secondary School Teachers, actors and Theatre Students. Τhe event was addressed by the Director of the Master’s Programme in History, Prof. G. Georgis, the Dean of the School of Law, Prof. A. Manitakis, the Director of the International Institute for Ancient Greek Drama & Theatre, Mr Nikos Siafkalis, and Dr Diotima Papadi, Head of the Master’s Programme in Greek Civilization.

Mr George Mikellis explained the dramaturgical aspects of the play and placed the play in its historical context. Dr Diotima Papadi discussed the intertextual references between plays which treat the same mythological topic, and underlined the various aspects of tragicality in the play. Dr Klitos Ioannides discussed the philosophical dimension of the play, while elaborating on the divine element in Greek tragedy. Mr Siafkalis attempted a staging approach of the Oedipus Tyrannus, pointing out all those great tragic themes which a director must bring out and communicate to the audience. On the final day of the seminar Mr Siafkalis presented on stage selected scenes of the Oedipus Tyrannus and awarded the certificates of attendance.
