Master of Arts in Theological Studies – Description

It is the first time that Theological Studies are offered in Cyprus on a postgraduate level, after receiving approval of the Ministry of Education and Culture. This Programme aims at responding fully to the needs both of the Church and of the Education.

Clergy and lay theologians, as well teachers, who teach religion, or philologists and graduates of other relevant humanities are eligible to attend the MA Programme in Theological Studies:
The Master of Arts offers the possibility of engagement with the highest achievements of human thought, assisted by divine wisdom.

The main aims of the Master of Arts in Theological Studies are:

  • To instruct the students in such a way, so that will be able to respond to the multiple demands of Education and to the remarkable deeds performed for the society by the Church during the past 2000 years
  • To create an international centre for Theological Studies and an independent tribute for the inter-religious dialogue and culture, at Neapolis University in Cyprus.
  • To provide Postgraduate Studies of high quality to Theologians, Spiritual people and scholars in Humanities, who wish to deepen their knowledge of theological issues and acquire skills which will contribute to their professional and personal growth.

Master of Arts in Theological Studies – Structure

The courses are divided into three semesters, as follows:

First semester

The first semester of the Master of Arts in Theological Studies includes Biblical Studies, Church History, Pedagogy and Christian Education. The Biblical Studies investigating introduction subjects, interpretation and theology of the Old and New Testament, as well as topics of the translation Septuagint (O’) and the New Testament. Ecclesiastical History includes the General Church History in the frame of Byzantine Civilization, History of the Church of Greece and Cyprus, as well as the History of the Church and the culture of the Slavs. Pedagogy and Christian Education explores the multidimensional phenomenon of education and learning, with particular emphasis in Christian Pedagogy and the teaching of religious education. In the Patristic Studies the following are taught: Greek, Latin and Eastern Church Patristic Literature. Alongside Patristic Theology, spirituality and Hagiography are examined, with emphasis on Cyprus Hagiography.  The Systematic Theology examines the teaching on the Orthodox Church comparing to the other confessions, History of Dogma, the inter-Orthodox and inter-Christian relations, as well as the Ecumenic movement and the modern heresies.

Second Semester

The second semester of Master of Arts in Theological Studies includes studies in Religion, Pastoral and Social Action of the Church, Byzantine Archeology and Art, studies on Christian Liturgy and Canon Law. The historical Religion Studies focus their attention on the study of world religions, in comparative religion, psychology and philosophy of religion.  The Pastoral and Social Action of the Church approaches the one pastoral work as pastoral counselling, pastoral communication, pastoral person and cultural issues, and on the other the social action of the Church as charity world and social welfare, social institution, economy and ecology.  The Byzantine Archaeology and Art examine the sources of Byzantine Art, architecture and monumental painting, mosaics, frescoes and icons, as well as the theology of the image.  The Canon Law studies the sources of Canon Law, the relation between Church and State and the modern statutory law of the Church of Cyprus.

Third Semester

The studies are concluded with a dissertation elaborated by students in the field of one of four directions of Theological Studies: a) Ecclesiastical History and Byzantine Civilization; b) Patristic Studies and Systematic Theology; c) Pastoral and Practical Theology and d) Christian Pedagogy and Philosophy of Education.

Criteria for admission

  • Degree in Theology from a recognized University
  • Degree from recognized Schools or Departments, national institutions or equivalent foreign institutions
  • Interview
  • Certificate of proficiency in English.

Prospects for Vocational Rehabilitation

The quality of the Studies and the breadth of the spectrum of scientific training session that covers enable the holders of the Master’s degree in Theology to offer their services as specialized clergy or laity:

  • In secondary education as teachers or in directorships positions of Education
  • In preaching and missionary activities of the Church
  • As ecclesiastical journalist
  • Social work of the Church or of other public and private entities
  • At the secretary offices of the Dioceses
  • In directions on charity foundations
  • In archaeological excavations in Christian sites
  • In the domain of religious tourism
  • In scientific research
  • In the teaching of religious education in primary school

Area. Time. Duration.

Where and when will the meetings take place?

Students / only three will participate in meetings that take place in the modern facilities of Neapolis University on Saturday (morning and afternoon) with free nights on college dorm. The meetings will take place every Saturday for 12 Saturdays each semester. The temporal resolution of the meetings shall be guided facilitate students will work during their studies and particularly students living outside Pafos.

How long is the program?

The Program’s duration is three semesters.
