The 2nd General European Assembly (2nd General Assembling Meeting) in the context of the European Programme Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7) entitled: “ECO-CEMENT-New microbial precipitation technology to produce high-strength, economic and ecological cement” for a duration of 3 years was held in Madrid on 19-21/02/2014 at the premises of UNICENTRO, in which Neapolis University Pafos participates with Dr. Julia Georgi, Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture and Director of European and Research Programs of Neapolis University and Dr. Nikos Baka, Civil Engineering, Lecturer at Neapolis University.
The European Project ECO-CEMENT will allow the retrieval of valuable resources from industry, the digress of CO2 emissions (since 5% of global carbon dioxide emissions from the production of cement. He project also can convert construction products in ecological cement, which can be used in the manufacture of new materials with the goal to mitigate threats to the environment, resulting from the greenhouse gas and waste management.
The ECO-CEMENT Program focuses on one of the most promising alternatives to produce a substitute cement Portland that “causes microbial precipitated of calcium carbonate (MICP)” using bacteria. These bacteria have the capacity to produce cement with a comparatively faster rate and are widely available in the soil and the natural environment.
Representatives from all partners in the European ECO-CEMENT ( Italy, Spain and Germany) participated in the 2nd General Assembling Meeting of ECO-CEMENT.
