Under the headline “The Cyprus ecosystem microscope” the Neapolis University in Cyprus and POED Cultural Commission in Paphos held an educational seminar on 05 March 2014. The main speaker was Angelos Agathaggelou, Biology PhD Candidate at the University of Cyprus, on “Discovering biodiversity in Cyprus”. Mr. Agathaggelou said that Cyprus, despite its small size, possesses an enormous wealth of flora and fauna with many endemic species. He also noted further that the last decades the reckless human development and consumerism has resulted in huge loss of this biodiversity on the planet.
At the same time he stressed that in Europe, almost a quarter of wild species are threatened with extinction and most ecosystems are degrading to a point that they are no longer able to be sustained. This degradation involves enormous social and economic losses for humanity.
