An Introduction to Offshore Structures & Design Criteria

Purpose of the lecture is to provide an overview on the offshore business with main focus on oil&gas.

With a short historical introduction to the development of the offshore activities worldwide, the main criteria normally applied to define the concept to develop an offshore reservoir will be illustrated.

These will include considerations regarding water depths and sea states as well as the availability of drilling facilities and installation means.

Main reference nomenclature will be also introduced.

Second part of the lecture will focus on main design parameters, showing some catastrophic design mistakes and lesson learned.

Dr. Andrea Spessa

With over 30 years of experience in the energy sector, Andrea Spessa is the Managing Director  of the Mediterranean Area for DNV where he deals with the verification and sustainability of infrastructure projects in the oil & gas and energy sector with particular attention to the of the development of Hydrogen topics.

He started his professional career working in Agip / ENI dealing with oil platforms and later in Edison where he coordinated the Adriatic LNG project, the first LNG offshore gravity base terminal in the world. He has been with DNV since 2015, after having gained over 10 years of experience as Managing Director and Board Member in an EPC company.
