The Minister of Education and Culture Mr. Costas Kadis attended the opening of the great exhibition ”For Seferis” organized by Neapolis University in Cyprus on the premises of the University. The Minister praised the importance of poetry by Seferis for Cyprus.
The President of the Council of the University of Neapolis, Mr. Michael Leptos, said that the exhibition is organized to celebrate 60 years since the publishing of the collection ” Κύπρον, οὗ μ᾿ ἐθέσπισεν ” and 45 years after the death of the poet. Furthermore, he said that the poet gave Paphos two poems ”Neophytos the Recluse speaks ” and ”Επικαλέω τοι την Θεόν” and that Neapolis University intends to make Paphos the center for Seferi studies.
The Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of Neapolis University in Cyprus, Professor Diomedes Markoulis, welcomed all guests and mentioned that Cyprus remained the primary concern of Seferis during the years of dictatorship. He was anxious and feared for Cyprus when he made his famous statement pleading to stop the anomaly. He did not live to see his fears being proven right.
The Ambassador of Greece, Mr. Ilias Fotopoulos, also spoke and said the struggles of Seferis, and especially the people of Cyprus did not go in vain and so much pain and so many lost lives did not fall into an abyss unnoticed. He then quoted Seferis regarding Cyprus’ continuing struggle for peace, freedom and prosperity.
The opening event of the exhibition was also attended by the Mayor of Paphos, the Higher Priest of Paphos, the District Inspector of the Department of Secondary Education Paphos, high school directors and many others.
Photos taken by Seferis during his trips to Cyprus were displayed. Photos of his life and other material from his life and professional career, his books, independent studies of his work, photocopies of manuscripts of Cypriot poems, magazines and newspapers’ tributes were all displayed. Also for the first time, the guest book of The Monastery of Saint Neophytos, which Seferis signed in 1953 when he visited, was presented.Also displayed were portraits of Seferis by famous Greek painters, a series of portraits of the poet by the great Greek painter Yiannis Psychopedis.
The exhibition will be open daily for all students to visit from 11a.m. to 1p.m.
Special tour for high school students and their teachers will take place every Friday at 11am by Professor G. Georgis.
