Neapolis University in Cyprus and the Paphos Citizens Initiative Group for the reunification of Cyprus, organized on February 19, 2014 a lecture on “The benefits of the reunification of Cyprus.”
The main speaker was Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat, Former Turkish Cypriot leader. The event, was attended by more than 300 people. Mr. Michael Leptos, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Neapolis University Pafos sent his greetings, as well as Kokos Ioannou, on behalf of the Citizens’ Initiative Group Paphos on the reunification Cyprus. Mr. Leptos described the presence of Mr. Talat in Paphos, as a creative act, and expressed the belief that what will be discussed in the lecture will be a positive contribution to a functional and viable solution to the Cyprus problem that plagues our common homeland for many decades now. Mr. Leptos also noted that the broad public participation in the event demonstrates not only the interest in such an exchange of views, but also more importantly, the desire for communication between the two communities. Mr. Ioannou said that events like this, boost the efforts to reunify Cyprus. The event was coordinated by the journalist Panicos Evripidou. Followed by a press conference by Mr. Talat.
Former leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Mehmet Ali Tala, described the conditions for the solution suitable and now we need to show political will. Asked, if Mr. Anastasiadis and Mr. Eroglu can find a solution to the Cyprus problem and why he did not reached one with the former President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, he said that he and Mr. Christofias resulted in a wide range of issues.
The former Turkish Cypriot leader said that the solution will help to overcome the economic crisis and stimulate grouth. As regards to the natural gas, Mr. Talat said that in peace times in Cyprus the natural gas can be used very reasonably. At the same time he expressed his optimism, saying that Mr. Eroglu is the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community and that the Turkish Cypriot people want the solution, so he is forced to bow to the will of the people world.
