Dr. Julia Georgi from Neapolis University invited from the Public Power Corporation of Greece in Athens to the Mining Restoration Conference

The Public Power Corporation of Greece and in particular the Mining Directorate and the Lignite Center of Western Macedonia on the occasion of the exhibition of the proposals of the Architectural Contest concerning the Rehabilitation and Reuse of former lignite mining regions in West Macedonia, organized a Conference “Discussing the Landscape regarding the redevelopment of former mining areas” on Friday, May 12, 2017, in the “T” building of the Neo Faliro Steam Power Station in Athens.

During the Conference greetings were given by Mr. Emmanouil Panagiotakis, President of the Public Power Corporation of Greece and by Mrs. Olga Kouridou, General Manager of the Mining Directory.

The first session of the conference was chaired by Mrs. Ariadni Vozani, Associate Professor at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens.

The conference began with Dr. Julia Georgi, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture, Land and Environmental Sciences, with a presentation on “Landscape Restoration and Examples of Reuse”.

The next  speaker was   Mr. Dimitris Giannisis, Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture of the University of Patras with the subject  “The restoration of the Landscape, One competition, Many Landscapes”, followed by Professor Panita Karamanea, Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete with the subject ” Landscape Restoration: Examples of Industrial Landscapes” . The session ended with Thomas Doxiadis, architect and engineer with the topic “Models of coexistence: Incorporation of new uses into traditional Cycladic landscapes”.

The second session was chaired by Mr. Dimitris Giannisis and started with the speech of Ms. Symela Andreadou, Civil Engineer of the Environmental Department of the LLDC, on “The Architectural Design of PPC for Rehabilitation and Re-use of former mining areas in Western Macedonia” followed by the presentation of the three first prizes as follows:

Presentation of 1st prize “eco-routes” Katerina Andritsou, Panita Karamanea, Thanasis Polyzodis

Presentation of 2nd Prize “Linear Landscapes” by Michael Goutzimanis, Eleftheria Diale. Anastasia Papadopoulos, Philippos Papapetrou, Venice Tsakalidou

Presentation of 3rd Prize No.1 Evdokia Mimikou

The conference ended with a discussion and a visit to the exhibition.
