Five Medals for Neapolis University Pafos Students at IMC 2026

Two Gold and Three Silver Medals for Students of the BSc in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence

Five students of Neapolis University Pafos were awarded medals at the International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC) 2026, held in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, from 27 July to 3 August 2026.

The students, all enrolled in the English-taught BSc in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence programme, participated in the international competition as the NUPBrains team and earned two Gold Medals and three Silver Medals.

The team consisted of Vitaly Kurin, Maksim Levitskii, Roman Shumilov, Roman Mishura, and Ilia Kondakov. Vitaly Kurin and Maksim Levitskii received Gold Medals, while Roman Shumilov, Roman Mishura, and Ilia Kondakov received Silver Medals. The team was led by Andrei Smolensky.

The IMC is an international university-level mathematics competition in which participants are required to solve complex problems that demand theoretical knowledge, analytical thinking, and precision in mathematical proof. This year’s competition brought together 447 students from 136 universities around the world.

Participation in the competition gave the University’s students the opportunity to test their knowledge and skills in an international academic environment alongside students from universities such as École Polytechnique, ETH Zurich, the Technical University of Munich, University College London, the University of Warsaw, and Charles University.

The students’ success is closely linked to the academic foundation of the BSc in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, which includes a strong focus on mathematics, algorithmic thinking, and problem-solving. These skills form an important part of education in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.

An additional distinction for the University came through the selection of a problem proposed by student Daniel Volostnov for the official first-round competition programme. Each year, dozens of proposed problems are reviewed, with only ten selected for the final competition programme following several stages of evaluation. The selection of the problem proposed by the Neapolis University Pafos student recognised its mathematical quality and originality.
