Lecture: Fighting Stereotyped Perceptions of gender roles through Education, by POGO

The Neapolis University in Cyprus in collaboration with the Committee of Young Women of POGO Paphos organized a lecture on December 10, 2013 on “Fighting Stereotyped Perceptions of gender roles through education”. The event was addressed by Professor Diomedes Markoulis, Vice Dean of the Neapolis University in Cyprus and Skevi Koukouma, GC of POGO and AKEL MP. Rapporteur was Christos Christofides, Head Office Education CC of AKEL. The event was coordinated by Maria Nikolaou, president of Young Women Committee Paphos POGO. In the lecture, it was noted, in particular, that the classroom is a reflection of society in many ways. Stereotypes are present in the classroom. It is there that teachers and students carrying a mesh of beliefs, attitudes, values and behaviours, which are often related to the roles of men and women in all areas of daily life. It was stressed that education is a powerful tool for shaping the culture of people of both students, teachers and parents. Traditional gender roles, as mentioned, is not something inherent, but the result of learning. In conclusion, it was stressed, that it would be wise to transfer to our children an climate of equality, where the person’s diversification criterion will no longer be gender, but the personal worth of each individual, the intelligence, the slopes, the preferences, talents and their needs.
